Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl, a woodchopper's children, are led by the Fairy Berylune on a magical trip through the past, present, and future to locate the Blue Bird of Happiness. To accompany them, the fairy magically transforms their dog Tylo, cat Tylette (played by Gale Sondergaard), and lantern ("Light") (played by Helen Ericson) into human form. The children have a number of adventures including a visit with their (deceased) grandparents in the Land of the Past, a stay in The Land of Luxury, an attack by angry trees and lightning which results in a forest fire, a meeting with Father Time, and, in the Land of Tomorrow, populated by unborn children, a meeting with Abraham Lincoln as a young boy (he prophesies "they will destroy me"), and a meeting with their future sister. The dream journey makes the previously unhappy and selfish Mytyl awake as a kinder and gentler girl who has learned to appreciate all the comforts and joys of her home and family.

  • one of my favourite childhood movies!!!!thank you!

  • I absolutlely ADORE Shirley Temple and the other girl, the sick one, played in THE LITTLE PRINCESS with Shirley as Becky, the little maid who lived in the attic with her. But this movie is awful hate to say it. I guess when THE WIZARD OF OZ was taken away from Shir;ey, they had to come up with something to spare her feelings, Imagine, THE WIZARD OF OZ is still box office dynamite. Poor Shirley.

  • anyone else here thinks the crotchety old fairy is a bit too err...eccentric? the dialogue and speech impediments dont feel like she was from the portrayed time era. besides, she was wearing a quilted blanket. weirdo meter went off the charts, dude. diggin' the busty cat lady tho.

  • "You can't be unhappy inside yourself without making others unhappy too." War is the answer to all your unhappiness, if you're unhappy enough. Happiness is more important than people give it credit for being, it is true. It's great that this movie can be seen on YouTube these days when so many voices are promoting more wars.

  • @celestecristal852 It's suppose to be a fairy tale country.

  • @AllieCat356 Taken away? No, she couldn't sing well enough that's why she didn't give her the part, thank God. She would have ruined it with her baby talk. They needed someone who could play a young girl but still have some maturity about her AND sing, like Judy Garland!

  • Tylette <3

  • This looks beautiful. It has always been overshadowed by The Wizard Of Oz because it was made in direct competition with it, and is the film that Shirley Temple made instead of playing Dorothy. I would like to see the whole movie

  • Very underrated movie. It has a powerful message.

  • When I was a girl, I loved this movie to death SPECIFICALLY because of the cat, Tylette.

  • Thank you so very much for uploading this movie. This is one of my favorites of all time and a childhood favorite that will forever be close to my heart. Rev. Mel Smith
