In the inaugural lecture of the Stevens Institute of Technology President's Distinguised lecture series, Norman Augustine discusses how new technologies are revolutionizing our lives, and the greatest changes still lie ahead. Along with the many benefits are the hidden, unforeseen consequences that will profoundly impact institutions that have been largely unchanged for decades or even hundreds of years. How are America and Americans likely to fare in this new world disorder, and what might we do to improve our chances?

Norman Augustine has held positions in government, industry, academia and the nonprofit sector. He served as under secretary and acting secretary of the Army, chairman and CEO of Martin Marietta Corporation and later chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, and professor at Princeton University. He has been chairman of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Red Cross, and the Aerospace Industries Association, served as president of the Boy Scouts of America, was a 16-year member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and serves on the PCAOB Advisory Council. He is a Regent of the University System of Maryland, a former trustee of MIT and Princeton, a trustee emeritus of Johns Hopkins, and holds 29 honorary degrees. He has served on the Board of Directors of Black & Decker, ConocoPhillips, Lockheed Martin and Procter & Gamble. Born in Colorado, he graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in aeronautical engineering.
