Walk-around video from inside the holder of the new HR apple at Citi Field, taken on February 16th, 2009.

The fresh apple, recreated from scratch for Citi Field and made of fiberglass with a foam core, is 16 feet tall and 18 feet in diameter, meaning it would tower over the 9-foot-tall original. The new one weighs 4,800 pounds, but adding the hydraulics and guideframes underneath means the total weight lifted will be around 8,500 pounds. The old apple weighed 582 pounds and was a staple at Shea since it's inception for the 1980 season, rising for every Met home run.

When a Met hits a homer, the apple will rise 15 feet. It's slated to make the trip in just three seconds, but the Mets may be able to tweak the timing once it is installed.

  • Glad you all like the vid.

To clarify..this is the NEW APPLE. The old apple is on display beyond the Right CF wall in the Bullpen Plaza, just inside the gate facing 126th Street and the Iron Triangle. It was cleaned up, and is now in great shape, however, while the new one cannot match its predecessors history, the former cannot match the new one in scale, design, beauty, and functionality.

  • damn that apple is huge!!

  • yeah, i have a video on my profile with the apple in it at the end. i assumed that that was the new one getting ready to go in. i didn't know that was the old one.

  • Not true. The old apple was placed in the concourse. There are pictures of it taken on February 14th posted on Stadium Page.

  • correct, the logo decal, leaf and stem were to be placed after installation.

  • they destroyed the old one. you might not have been able to tell by seeing it from the seats at shea, but it was in REALLY bad shape. plus, it wasn't big enough for this new apple hole. this new apple is 2 times as big.

  • thats not the old apple. what you saw was the new one, about to be put in. they kept it behind the bullpen for about a week before they finally installed it.
