And if the government was doing such a horrible job that the people would turn against it, do you really think that the military would just start shooting the people? Soldiers are people too.

I always thought the 2nd amendment was basically there because the early US didn't have a standing army.

Firearms are an investment, and much more valuable than paper dollars. Guns can only increase in value over years if they are well maintained, while the dollar currency sinks. Also, the 2nd Amendment was made so that if the government goes rogue/tyrannical, the People could overthrow the government. Overthrowing the government of the world's most powerful nation would mean having to fight the military. Thus, an arsenal at home.
