Festus, in the desert hunting escaped killer Gard Dixon is wounded by the outlaw. He is found by Ben Snow, a half-crazy hermit who has been living in the desert with his gold for many years.
@holypants133 Cannot take anything extra on the trail Because they must travel light and fast. Yes water does spill out and canteens won't stop a bullet. When you think about it what else could go wrong in the desert? They did not have Unmaned planes or Preditors. No land mines. They were simple times with a lot of simple minded people. Perhaps we can learn from their mistakes? Anyway there is nothing new under the sun. Same but different in little ways here and there.
Guess you wouldn't have a show without it happening but isn't rather frustrating to see these "trail wise" fellers never taking extra water with'em when they head out in the desert?, It certainly has been used and used and used. How many times have you seen the canteen drain out to boot, in every western from Gunsmoke to Have Gun, damn canteen always dains out..... or, or sometimes gets shot, thats the only other senerio they ever came up with. But I still love'm
is this the episode where festus is tracking down a killer and the outlaw spots festus and he shoots festus and a old man rescues festus or ie that a different episode
"Island In The Desert" would be one of my all-time favorite "Gunsmoke" episodes on television. (The Late) Strother Martin played his role -- Ben Snow -- with panache and spontaneity. "I'll cut you Festus ... I'll cut you good ..." would be my favorite quotation from that episode in reference to the 1974-1975 Television Season. A 14!!

RIP James "Matt Dillon" Arness 1923-2011.
Now with his brother Peter Graves, 1926-2010. God bless you both, and thanks for the memories.
