I have completed the restoration for this radio. I still want to take a look at the BFO circuit. I do not think it is doing much at the moment and I really do not understand how it works. I think, when I'm done, it will go up for sale. Please let me know if you would like to have it. Otherwise its going on ebay.

  • Nice looking rig, George. You do good work. What brand of hammertone paint did you use? The hammering appears to be somewhat subtle. I like that.

  • @joernone I used Rustoleum hammertone in the spray can. You are right about the subtle hammering. That could have been because I rushed the second application on my part but, I do think it looks fine on this radio. Thanks for the comments!

  • I really like that custom cap you made.

I've used wax on a few caps, but find it to be really messy. Next time I do some paper cap restuffing, I'm going to try some brown hot glue sticks.

  • Thanks for the video on the S38. My dad had an S38 that my brother (AI4QT) and I listened to as young boys in the 50s and 60s. It seemed like a complex radio at time as I used the BFO and Band Spread to fine tune stations. I also remember, more than once being shocked when I touched the case!

    Thanks for the memories.

  • Nice work! That's turned to be a really great-looking radio! It's really interesting to see how this one works in comparison to the National SW-54 you did awhile back, to which I've heard the S-38 was a close competitor. I figured since you've decided to sell the S-38, maybe you prefer the National. Or do you have a preference?
