Yes, maybe it will alienate in the worldwide demograhic, but it really isn't that big of a problem in the United States.
I live, literally, in the middle of nowhere. My next door neighbors are cows. I don't even live in any city boundaries. I have a 5mbps connection with the option of a 6mbps connection from another service. The days of 300kbps are pretty much over. Almost anyone who wants to pay for fast internet can get it these days.

Let's think here... 70% of the US citizens have an internet connection compatible with OnLive. That is a wide audience. Probably wider than traditional consoles because because upfront costs are extremely low. A great marketing strategy.

And what percent of that figure in itself are going to be OnLive's target audience? In reality, a very small chunk - this also means that OnLive will alienate a potential consumer base by completely ignoring them in favour of a demographic that might not give a shit about videogames.

So you are saying that the "potential consumer base" of gamers, I assume, do not have >1.2mbps connection? I could bet that 90% of gamers have a >1.2mbps connection. OnLive doesn't alienate hardly anyone, it only expands. This would mean that consoles are alienating consumers because of their high upfront costs.

What about the large number of gamers living in rural areas? Xbox Live caters for them (back when I was connecting at 300kb/s in the middle of nowhere, XBL still ran); unless OnLive does a similar thing it's still going to be unavailable to (and hence 'alienate' a large chunk of) the worldwide demographic.

(runoff from last post - ends 'demographic')- As much as people would like to think, not everyone is clustered into the 'burbs of big cities or whatever - which is the only place you're really likely to get a fast, stable connection. This might not be the case in the US, but I don't know. I would assume not.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter if some people can't play. There are still enough people with broadband to make OnLive profitable. This argument is pointless

I spose. the discussion was stimulating while it lasted though :D
one thing I will say though is that I'm jealous. if your nextdoor neighbours are cows, steak must be easy to get hold of for very little money, almost instantly.
