When Yao is teaching and demonstrating new things to students, he usually says about using 20-30% of power. Firstly focus on using intent, keeping feeling.
@dacheng After researching this, I realise he's quite old - so I guess he looks good for his age. However, after watching a number of Yi Quan videos, I notice that the senior Yi Quan guys never punch with any power on a bag or pad. Is there a reason for this?
@MartialSkeptic He is 57. Sometimes he hits bag with more power. But not every time or every punch. Usually lightly, just demonstrating, what students should practice, and sometimes adding short but more powerful series. Generally most material on the clips is from teaching. And most is from basic level, where the stress is on learning using mind activity and feeling, and he tells students to do it with just 20-30% of power. If they try to hard, they forget about working with intent and feeling.
At second level there is more focus on big power, so then he is usually demonstrating some shorter series with more power. Then third level is mainly about ability of swift changing and adapting - the above clip represents third level. But most of the stuff which was posted before was from beginners classes - first level and simply demonstrating beginners' exercises.
