In this case, it was putting in the first board, which was the threshold where the direction of the planks changed. Because none of the rooms were really square, I had to fiddle with the layout to get it as close as possible while maintaining gaps at the walls. Once that was done, the next most difficult task was nailing. It was exhausting to put the nails through the very hard hickory. It sometimes took 5 or 6 swings of the hammer compared to 1 or 2 swings for the pine floor that we did.
