"Suite Concertante For World Woowinds & Symphony Orchestra" by Pedro Eustache ©2009 Soloist-Composer: Pedro Eustache Conductor: Gustavo Dudamel The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (SBYOV) Venue: Center for Social Action Through Music Caracas - Venezuela 2-12-09 Mr. Eustache's "Suite Concertante for World Woodwinds & Symphony Orchestra", was world-premiered on 2-8-09 under the baton of his fellow-countryman & most celebrated young orchestral conductor in the world, Mtro. Gustavo Dudamel, with his world renown "Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar". This 45 min. long-12 movements-21 solo world-WWs sonic-global 'tour de force' is a 'first' in the concertante-symphonic repertoire. It directly reflects the cultural-interconnected reality of our times: while inspired by different music cultures of the world it is formally based on the western classical music concertante-symphonic tradition. X. South-America 3: Venezuela: The Yekuana Fjitchu": I was born and raised in Venezuela... I wanted to represent my country of origin with an unusual something with elements from her dignified and inexhaustible-multidimensional cultural riches, yet not well known [there is yet so much to be discovered from our cultural heritage!]... Something with substance, strength, and significance, with depth, transcendental, current content and consequential global awareness: The Fjitchu of the Yekuana people! The Fjitchu, an ancient small cane flute [possibly thousand years old, that produces uniquely delicious melodies], is from the Venezuelan Amazon jungle. I found it through the "Manoa Foundation, a nonprofit organization preserving ethnological values of Venezuela, who introduced me to Dr. Charles Brewer-Carias [now my Fjitchu teacher]. This remarkable man researched this flute and its music in situlearning how to play it and make itas well as documenting it in both audio recordings and drawings [in little booklets à la Leonardo Da Vinci in 1960-63!]**... For the first time ever the Fjitchu comes out of the jungle into the concert-hall, with three short songs by Joaquín, the Yekuana flautist. This instrument is traditionally played at night in the jungle, the orchestra, then, personifies the sounds of the jungle, by imitating the sounds of the jungle previously recorded by Jose Miguel Perez-Gomez, Dr. Charles & I, followed by the accompaniment of water toads [recorded at Jungle Environments of a Caracas five-star hotel by my colleague Javier Montilla], & finishing with a combination of these two on the last song. Since we are in the dark—emulating the jungle night—maestro Dudamel conducts the passing from one section to the next by using a LED mini-flashlight, which mimics the firefly I saw several times the night of our jungle sound-recording expedition Solo World Woodwind Instrument(s): The Yekuana Fjitchu... ** Together with the Manoa Foundation we have on the works an ongoing multi-media project to present this unique flute, with unpublished images & sound recordings, in order to promote this precious traditional instrument, so little known in Venezuela and the world.
