Kudos to M/s Doshi and Mundhra for taking up this bold subject which did not fit in the usual commercial film formula. A sensitively directed film, it deals with the worst form of exploitation inflicted on the lower castes by the powerful upper caste community, and shows how the bureaucracy, administration and judiciary is maneuvered by them to attain their ends. Extremely sensitively portrayed by Nandita Das in the pivotal role, it is a " shocking story .........., with bright landscape, colourful attire, and picture postcard beauty, but scratch the surface, and find the dark realities of casteism, chauvinism and exploitation", as succinctly described in the film itself.
Nandita Das herself said (Mumbai Mirror-29.07.2011), "In the film, I played the character of an illiterate woman.... She .. is still fighting for justice. As an actor, I went through her journey of being ..... abused, humiliated and threatened. Though I just had to emote, the ......... scene was emotionally and physically very draining. I ... felt a deep sense of shame and anger.....The woman in me had taken over the actor, and it was one rare time that I screamed on a shoot. That scene made me feel so violated ....... In that moment, I actually felt what a woman goes through when she is ..... physically abused......"
This excerpt is just a subdued introduction to the grim realities shown in the film.

  • As far as Premanand ji's querries go, 1. I do not work in or for any studio, 2. I am not employed by anybody to upload anything on U-tube or anywhere else and I do not get paid for what I do. I just happen to be a film buff, and am doing this out of love for Hindi cinema. I enjoy uploading small excerpts from films from the “golden era” so as to act as means, for the generation younger to mine, to appreciate the quality of films/music of those times.

  • I must acknowledge the magnanimity shown by Premanand ji in being the first to so generously praise the uploaded excerpt from 'Bawandar' . I also am thankful to Chiku62 and Venkateshwarji for being kind in saying nice words about my effort. Thanks indeed, all of you.
