Drake was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 1/2. He has an extraordinary memory and started reading when he was 16 months old. At age two, he began learning geometry including complex shapes such as heptagons, hexagons and the differences between scalene and equilateral triangles. One of his favorite programs was Mr. G's Geometry on PBS and when he started learning about tessellations, it became difficult for his parents to keep up with thier two year old's thirst for knowledge. Fortunately, he moved on from geometry onto geography where he quickly memorized all the states over a couple evenings while playing with some flash cards while his mother cooked. He then move onto clocks until he mastered telling time. At the age of three, he's learning all about coins and dollar bills and about the people on them... from there he's learning about the president's and many of their wives. He's also learning basic addition, subtraction and fractions. He can't wait to learn multiplication and division and tries to get at those flashcards.

  • This kid is brilliant! He must have amazing parents!

  • No, he just has great therapists!!!

  • So does your son experience any difficulty socialising or "fitting in" so to speak?

  • He has problems socializing & with eye contact. He perserverates on his interests and it's difficult for him to have a normal conversation with others, but we're working on it with lots of therapy! He has splinter skills. For instance, he lacks self help skills and couldn't put on his own shirt to save his life, but can tell you who was married to James Madison and most of the 1st wives. He can read at least at a 5th grade level, but can't do simple puzzles. His brain just works differently.
