Europac3d a company specialising in 3d scanning and reverse engineering was recently comissioned to scan a Madonna and child staute at the Courtauld Gallery in London.
A Romer portable measuring arm was used with a Perceptron V5 laser scanner. The advantage of this system is that large objects can be quickly scanned without loss of accuracy or resolution, collecting points at 458,000 points per second.
The file produced was a triangulated surface mesh as STL or OBJ format suitable for the end task of 3d printing a minature model of the statue.
