On June 1, 2008, John carried his favorite cockatiel, Valentine, in a small pet carrier along the 300 Precita block of Bernal Heights. He wanted to share his love of cockatiels with a friend by sharing Valentine with her.

The gusty day frightened Valentine, and when, by accident, the handle of the carrier failed and created an opening, Valentine swept out of the carrier & up 1000 feet into the sky! Though John followed him the best he could and searched every back yard he could access, Valentine was gone.

Valentine is a very special, tame male cockatiel who says his name, Valentine, over and over again, occasionally peppering it with "I love you, Valentine!" John is heartbroken by the loss of his friend.

John has looked for him everywhere, putting up posters, posting on craigslist and parrot911.

In the meantime, he has found three lost cockatiels he had hoped were his. They are not—so now we are hoping their owners can be found, too. Here they are:

On July 14th, a skittish male cockatiel was found in a garage in west Oakland. He has a toe which was broken long ago and has healed and callused. He was found with many scars on his face; he has surely endured some great trauma.

In Pacifica, on July 26th, a very tame and sweet male cockatiel was found. Though he is friendly, he is not Valentine.

On August 4th, a presumed male cockatiel was found in Potrero Hills. He's semi-tame and has a dark feather on his head.

John is offering a $1000 reward for the return of his beloved Valentine. If you believe you have seen his bird, please email him at JAF7@aol.com
