Government forces battled with rebels in north Yemen on Sunday (August 23). Two Shiite Muslim leaders were reportedly killed.
Yemen reports that government forces killed over 100 rebels on Sunday (August 23) as conflict intensifies two days after a government-urged cease-fire.
The impoverished state of 23 million people is battling al Qaeda militants and secessionist discontent in the south, as well as the rebellion in the mountainous north bordering Saudi Arabia.
A government-released report to the media says that 100 bodies belonging to Houthi rebels have been found on roadsides outside Haraf Sufyan.
The government refers to the rebels as Houthis after the tribal name of their leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.
The government also claims that two rebel leaders - Mohsen Hadi al-Qaoud and Saleh Jarman were killed in the Haraf Sufyan area of Amran Province.
The rebels did not confirm the report, but they say Yemeni planes bombed a commercial district near Saada city.
A military source said the raid targeted a petrol station used to supply the rebels.
Ceasefire conditions proposed to the rebels were rejected last week.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh said the government "would face this sedition in a decisive way" if rebels rejected peace.
The U.S. embassy in Sanaa issued a statement urging both parties to return to a ceasefire agreement reached last year.
That agreement requires that both parties ensure security of relief workers and the safe passage of emergency relief supplies to camps housing internally displaced persons.
