In 1888, Hawai'i is a paradise on the brink of civil unrest under the malevolent influence of a rebel party with links to the American government. The tide has turned against the long-incumbent royal family, among whom is the beautiful Princess Ka'iulani. Scarcely 13 years old, she is separated from her family and homeland and sent to a place that couldnt be more different from Hawai'i - Victorian England. Coming to terms with her fate, Ka'iulani undergoes a harsh education that equips her with a sense of duty and honor. What's more, she falls in love with a spirited young Englishman. Emerging from childhood and inspired by blossoming romance, Ka'iulani realizes she must end the injustices suffered by her people. She sets off to meet President Grover Cleveland to prove that she and her people are not the "barbarians" portrayed by the American press. Based on the true story, Barbarian Princess is an inspiring romance about an unlikely heroine and her unwavering fight to defend the independence of her people.

  • great job Ms. Kilcher

  • LOL . . . when you leave it to others to tell your story, it is their story! So, instead of whining around how they didn't tell your story right, how about you step up and get the skills, the money the support to make your own story thata others will predictably critisize - just as you have done.

  • @laylurr . . . Yes laylurr. And, why haven't hawaiians made their own movie about her and others.

  • Q'orianka Kilcher represented Princess Kaiulani so well. She embraced her character beautifully. Loved the movie. Someone should've warned me to take lots of tissue to wipe the tears. We are Polynesian but our ancestors came from South America. Bottom line is she represented well. That's all that matters.

  • @laylurr . . . Her resemblence to Princess Kaiulani is quite remarkable. For that, if no other reason, she was a good choice.

  • As a native Hawaiian I feel it doesnt matter if shes Hawaiian or not. It would be preferable, but as long as the story is told well then it is fine. It also doesnt hurt that she seemed to take the part seriously and with respect. Its a movie, and movies arent real, actors pretend to be all kinds of things they are not. If the truth of the story is told, then that is what is important.

  • why didn't they choose a REAL hawaiian girl to play princess Ka'iulani??!?!?!

  • This is so interesting. Q'Orianka is from Peru and so Hawaiian looking. What is the name of that Foundation?

  • Oooooh yeeeees !
