*Please read this*! When I joined the USMC Aviation field in 1967, I had to learn to be a Marine Rifleman first. Here, I show you some 40 year old images (1969-1970) from Vietnam and Japan, including Hiroshima and Japan's Expo '70 World's Fair. We rode motorcycles to it while stationed there in 1969-1970. The music is from the 3 piece band we formed in the sandbag bunkers of Vietnam. We wound up playing live at the "Slipway Club" the night before we left Japan to go home to the USA. I present some of it here that I recorded on my Akai reel to reel. The reel to reel you see in this video's introduction is a Teac that I have now.

The tape has degraded some and it was recorded live in a hollow building, but at least you can get an idea of what a bunch of Marines sound like after being though what we had just endured.

I don't profess to be a great guitarist, as I have seen some amazing guitar videos of yours.

But, we were just a few guys having fun being happy to still be alive.

The video shows you how it was 40 years ago before computers, cell phones, Ipods, Digital Cameras, DVDs, CDs, etc. Not even had Atari been invented yet!

I always hoped that we did not do that "war" for nothing! If nothing else, learn from it and let's not do that again!

Rest easy and Semper Fi to all the military folks who were and still are, willing to put it all on the line so we can live our lives as we are used to..

Best regards,
Dave Herbert
USMC Ret.

  • Thanks for your service. Loved the vid. I am retired Army. My helicopter went down during a mission and there was 6 of us aboard. 4 were killed and I and another buddy crawled out and medivaced back to the states where I spent a year at WRAMC with two broken legs. Long story but I am doing ok now. Thanks again.

  • I was in 2 vmcj squadrons with this guy and he has embellished this video quite a bit. The hooch that hit in the rocket attack was a VMA-242 hooch across the street from us...close but no cigar. He was a good 40 yds from the impact area. I have pictures of the debris also. We never went "on patrol" and the Chima Beach pictures were from a squadron beer party.. I hate to see people streaching the truth so bad.

  • Ah, the '60's. What time.

  • Thank you Nightflyer. I am especially imterested in the booklet which you collected stamps in Expo. I was only a 10 yesr old boy in Hong Kong when Expo was held in Japan. I developed to collect Expo 1970 stamps as my theme after I went to work. I have now posters, entrance ticket, postcards and even a fan from Expo. Please let me know if you would spare the booklet to me cause it will make my collection much more multi-perspective.

  • nice version of house of the rising sun (:

  • Soft ambient sound mixed with period music is a very nice touch. I believe the Expo was in Osaka. It is a nice way to preserve your experience in Asia. I hope you don't have an extreme opinion about the bombing of Hiroshima - it's a very complex one- little known is the fate of US POWs. The name of the B24 crews who were captured and killed in the blast are now included in the list stored under the arch memorial. We must evolve and move forward, never stuck in the past.

  • I went to Expo 70 in the summer of that year. I was only 10 years only but I remember is so well.

  • Japan is still beautiful, but I would loved to have seen it 40 years ago ( ! )

  • Excellent slice of history here. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have no doubt it brings back memories for you (good and bad), and reminds us of the fortunes we have today as a result of the many sacrifices made yesterday. Thank you for your unwavering service to our nation. And thanks for showing off a beautiful Technics "classic" reel to reel. Great piece of electronics there!!

  • Thanks for your voluntary service, your unwavering patriotism, your dedication to R/C hobbies, and this awsome video! You are the epitome character, courage, and american life.

  • Hahahahaha Quebec had to have its own Pavilion set apart from the Canadian Pavilion, damn sepretists. lol
