What happens when you run out of Oxygen!

The respiratory chains in mitochondria get 'constipated' with electrons and shut down! First you gotta watch a vid on Cellular Respiration (Electron transport chain) like

It shows what oxygen does (ultimate electron & hydrogen receptor) If it's not present THIS video shows what happens to the machinery. This causes your mitochondria to go "off line" and until you get some more O2 the only ATP you'll get is from glycolysis and that's not enouh to keep big multicellular organisms like us alive.

yes it is.but you can only use OXYGEN if there is oxygen. If you are exerting yourself too much or busy drowning O2 doesn't get there in time & the mitochondria shuts down

What about fermentation?

fermentation is the "no oxygen" form of respiration. Your skeletal muscles can do it but it's not enough to keep your brain alive

@picardposer actually the brain can do fermentation into Lactic acid, but the pH will down drastically and you will be on acidosis ;D
