One of my favorite drum tones of all time is off of Rage Against the Machine's "Evil Empire". Andy Wallace is one of those guys who always gets a great, warm drum mix, and this is my attempt to emulate that sound.

No drum samples (Superior Drummer, Steven Slate, etc.) were used on this recording. No drumagog or custom samples were used either - just the pure live drum take. Also, no artificial reverb or effects other than compression, gates, preamps and EQ were used.

Mics:
kick - Audix d6
rack toms Audix d2
floor tom Audix d4
overheads - Oktava Russian MK-012
snare top - sm57
snare bottom - sm7b

Recorded at Random Awesome! recording studio, Dec. 22, 2010.

  • Wow, how did you get it so clear? what microphones are you using? and what microphone would you recommend for recording scream vocals? thanks. great video!

  • @MattTisbert Thanks Matt! The clarity comes from well-tuned drums and a somewhat well-treated garage live room, haha (still some work to do - an ongoing project)

I'm using mostly audix mics - D2 and D4 for the rack and floor, D6 for the kick and an i5 in the room somewhere. sm57 for the top of the snare, SM7B for the bottom, and a pair of Russian made Oktava MK012s for the overheads.

Screaming vocals I use AE3300, SM7B, and M-Audio's Sputnik. Sometimes an SM58 as well.

  • @randomawesomestudio Thanks so much man, This really means a lot to me. Im trying to record my band so i bought some recording stuff. thanks again man, i really appreciate the response!

  • @MattTisbert no problem, bud! Glad to hear you're actually recording drums, as opposed to programming them like so many studios ;P Keep it real :)

  • @MattTisbert oh yeah, brand new heads go a long way for clarity. Just as much as new guitar or bass strings.

  • @randomawesomestudio For sure. Could you post a video for me and others or explain how i should set up the mic's? I looked it up but there arent any real ones that i can follow. And any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for answering again!
