How to Make an Online Appointment
Welcome to the College of Western Idaho's Writing Center. This tutorial will help you set up an appointment that will be conducted online instead of face-to-face. This service is different than the writing center's email consultation service, since it is completely synchronous and instantaneous with chat and webcam functions. All appointments are set up with the Writing Center's online scheduler where students can access appointment availability. This schedule is also used for face-to-face appointments.
First, make your way to the WC main webpage on CWI's website. You will find as you navigate the Writing Center's main page, a big yellow button that says "Schedule an Appointment." This button will lead you to the Writing Center's appointment scheduler, MyWritingCenterOnline for CWI. All students must register their information into the database in order to make an appointment. To do this, you can "click to register."
Please fill out all the required information. This will allow the service to send you an email update when you make and cancel appointments. It will also allow the WC who is making appointments. Your personal info, other than your name, will not be given to non-staff members.
After you are finished registering, you can now log in. Once logged in, the system will automatically take you to the face-to-face appointment board. To view online appointment availability, select the "Online Campus" option in the location bars near the top of the scheduler. Once you reach the online campus option, you will be able to view the online appointment availability.
Red blocks represent when a writing consultant is not available. White blocks represent an open space for an available appointment. Yellow blocks indicate when you have made an appointment. To make an appointment, hover over the time slot you desire to meet online with a writing consultant. Let's say you are going to make an appointment with writing consultant at 9 am. Fill out the required info to give the consultant a good idea of what you would like to work on during the appointment. Then, save the appointment.
When it's time for the online appointment, select the appointment slot that you scheduled earlier. The same way you make the appointment is the same way you get to the online appointment. In the pop-up window, select "join or start online consultation." This will launch up another pop-up window. This pop-up window will be where the online session takes place.
The window has a whiteboard to copy and paste papers or assignments where you can highlight, bold, or underline contents of the paper. Both the consultant and the writer can edit this whiteboard and view it simultaneously. You will also be able to chat using the text chat function in the lower right-hand corner. Your chat conversation will show up in the upper right hand corner.
One of the most useful tools in the Online Appointment is the video/audio chat. To access this, select the "start video/audio chat" above the text chat function. In the new pop-up window, connect your webcam or microphone to the platform. This way, both the consultant and the writer will be able to instantaneously communicate through video or audio means.
If, for some reason, there are issues with technology and one or more of these options do not work, you can exit the session and refresh it. All of your data and chat text chat conversation will be saved. However, if there are continuing issues, you can always submit your piece of writing to the writing center's email service at firstname.lastname@example.org. We can also help trouble-shoot through the email service.
If you wish to cancel your appointment, just click on the same time block where you scheduled the appointment, and select "cancel appointment" at the bottom of the pop-up window.
