They close the highway so they can blast down snow from the mountain side. I was once caught in a road closure, and had to wait over 6 hours.

They usually close it for a couple hours; though it can be closed for a few days. The problem often isn't the road, as much as the snow accumulations on the mountains above the road. Then, there are dangers of avalanches, and a detachment of artillery comes out and shoots a 105mm howitzer to bring down the snow in a controlled avalanche. Rogers Pass gets about 20 metres of snow per winter. Winter don't mess around in Canada, eh?

It was closed for about an hour for avalanch blasting on the eastside. There was a lot of fresh snow, but the road was well cleared.
