Basically what happened was they hired Bob James for a theme song and some inter-scene riffs, he wrote Touchdown for the theme and among others, Angela for a scene with a girl called Angela and Alex Rieger (Judd Hirsch) thye preferred that to Touchdown and used that as the theme. They also used a visual inter-scene riff as the opening video, that's why it's so obviously edited. Anyway, which is your favourite and which do you think the best choice was?

  • I LIKE 'ANGELA' BETTER. IT FITS THE ERA AND THE SCENE OF THE TAXI GOING OVER THE QUEENSBOROUGH BRIDGE BETTER THAN 'TOUCHDOWN'. THIS IS MY FAVORITE VERSION OF THE THEME, CAN I ASK YOU WHERE YOU GOT IT ? MIGHT IT BE ON THE SEASON 1 DVD? I'M PLANNING TO ORDER THAT DISC AS I HAVE JUST RECENTLY GOT INTERESTED IN THE SHOW. IT WAS ONE OF THE HITS I WATCHED GROWING UP IN THE 70'S. I WAS BORN IN N.Y.C. AND WHEN THEY AIM THE CAMERA SOUTH YOU CAN SEE THE TWIN TOWERS. THANK YOU!

  • @inwood211 Actually i took the visuals from season 1 and then season 2, the audio i downloaded off YouTube.

  • I love the second song, I used to watch it every night at midnight on CBC that when CBC was good. Makes me think of my teenage days. Just the song alone brought back memories.

  • "Touchdown" isn't a bad song at all. But I thought "Angela" fits the whole nature of the premise of the show much better, imo.

  • despite the hilarious nature of the show there always was a subtle melancholy to it especially with Alex's character (a guy not going anywhere in life content to be a cabbie) so the second theme was the better choice. Such a great show!! the days before most comedy became mostly ironic and such. This show had jokes and heart.

  • second one, for sure.

  • I like Bob James, he's not bad. Though actually, i kinda like Johnny Costa better. I wonder what it would've been like if he improvised on Angela? I know Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is a little kids show, but that doesn't change the fact he was a serious jazz musician. He'd probably make Angela sound so pretty w/ that nice nightclub/stripper-style arrangement he used when he played the closing overture of MRN.

  • the first version sounds like something out of a 70's action movie, doesn't capture the spirit of the series at all.

  • I liked Angela better. It has an intoxicating riff. There's something about Bob James fusion jazz that just perfectly matches that 70's urban jungle of New York. It really represents the raw feeling and energy you feel when you're in a big city.

  • @inwood211

If you're interested, Bob James did an album called "Genie" which is basically the soundtrack to the series. It contains the TV version (one of them) of the song Angela.
