Officially though I think its cataloged under its Latin name Sol. So when you refer to the sun as a star amongst many you're supposed to refer to it as Sol.
Isn't "sun" simply the word given to any planets home star? As in if we lived in a planet orbiting, say Proxima, wouldn't it be our 'Sun"? Of course its official name would still be Proxima.

By using red and blue shifted spectra from distant galaxies to calculate the time period since all observable matter in the universe existed at one point whichy is believed to be the big bang (I think...).
