Lots of misinformation, myths and general ignorance on cycle helmets here! I've tried my best in recent months and weeks to read up on the testing procedures and laws in the UK related to this, but it's not been easy.

This video is my own opinion and thought on cycle helmets. I have to point this out, so dont sue me, I aint an expert! If in doubt ask the manufacturer, you MP, Council, road safety charity, etc!

A previous video of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FHxgd9TvW8 shows some of the other damage the car did to me. Though that isn't the discussion here. The discussion is the "helmets save lives" myth that has arisen in recent years. Dont put your safety in the hands of a few bits of plastic and foam by taking unnecessary risks.

  • Look at the label, it says "Made In China" what part of everything made in China is JUNK don't you understand?

  • MET make these in Italy ;-)

  • blow your nose you snotty git.

  • Haha! You wanna hear it now!

  • btw racing at my level is about 25 - 30 mph

  • I do rather like what I have seen of the Giros. I use an MET Duello I think its called.

I think some of the cheaper ones perform almost as well as the more expensive should you off. What you get with the more expensive ones that I like is better ventilation, proper inmoulded plastic shell (so if it cracks it wont shatter shards down your face), and lastly better strap adjustment.

C+ did a good round up recently.Always important to match helmet and bike. I have red for a red frame.

  • i have a giro atmos a bit flash but i am a racer so i need to look good its wicked ive crashed before several times and i dont have a single crack i love it but im gonna get a new one soon though to match my kit

  • I thought it might be similar with motorbike helmets but was a little unsure so kept it cycle related. I've known a few old bikers (triumphs and harleys).

Everything is now settled with my off, the guy's insurer paid out several thousand £ as a result. He also thought he could keep stum and not tell his insurer (despite the police/ambulance being involved) and I think that had some bearing on the cost.

If anything I'd say its beneficial tojoin the CTC and invest in a good in-mouldedhelmet

  • Nice video DF. I'm in the market for a new helmet actually so will follow some of your links to see if I can get some guidance on the subject.

Interestingly motorbike helmets are seen as disposable items as well, and as with cycle helmets should be replaced every few years. People say even if you drop a helmet on the floor it should be replaced.

Sorry to hear about your off last year, did you have the cam at the time? All settled OK?
