Brown used his skills on selected participants who answered an advertisement. Under the guise of a "motivational seminar" (where they would allegedly learn Brown's skills) Brown recruited a number of participants, eventually manipulating a number of them into robbing a security van in broad daylight. "The Heist" has been described by Brown as one of the stunts of which he is most proud.

I recommend his book 'Tricks of the Mind' - it's full of neat explanations about how to do the stuff he does, and it's written in a very witty style.

@GabeHathouse I think there's a bit of what magicians call "instant stooge" effect. They're not set up ahead of time, but it's when people play along because they know they're supposed to and don't want to be jerks.

If you've ever seen the Penn & Teller card trick with the knife (look up "Teller stabs Penn" for a recent version), they call out this very effect on shuffling. Granted it's not armed robbery but there's no prep or screening either. This was interesting but not quite "programming."
