Manhattan Control Room Shift Manager Ed Savage is hanging it up after 60 years at Con Edison. You heard right. He's reached the big six-oh for the job.
He started on October 4, 1951, the day after Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" sent the Brooklyn Dodgers home and gave the New York Giants the National League pennant. You know, back when Truman was president.
Savage started as a messenger, and got his nickname "Fast Eddie" after earning his stripes years later as a splicer, putting together cable after burnouts to keep the lights on.
He eventually began working in the Manhattan Control Room, and for the last 39 years he's been a shift manager. He's kept a watchful eye over the electric system that serves 1.6 million residents in the borough, not to mention the businesses and institutions that constitute the financial capital of the world, scattered over 23 square miles.
"It's been a great run, and I have a great crew, and I don't mind telling you, they're the best," Savage said.
They think the same of him, and they take special satisfaction when he'll raise his hands and spontaneously clap them over his head at the end of a good shift.
However complex the situation, Savage always has been ready, deploying available resources and sophisticated technical and mechanical expertise with the precision of a virtuoso evoking the last measure of musicality out of a rare Stradivarius.
"He'll be missed," said John Miksad, senior vice president of Electric Operations. "Guys like Ed don't come along all that often, and, by the way, whoever stays that long? It's not a story you hear anymore, but we're happy you hear it here. Most importantly, we're happy with the continuing commitment to excellence Ed brought to his work. His skills never diminished; he's leaving at the top of his game."
Savage's father worked here before him for 48 years, and his son Michael has been and will continue working here after him, constituting 136 years of service to the company altogether.
Maybe he knows Brian Leonardo.....Sicko!!!!!
