I recorded this as my final video for my introductory ASL class at Northern Illinois University. Any comments or feedback are appreciated!

Below is an English interpretation for my "signing-impaired" audience.
---------

Hi! What's up? My name is Ross Knoll. I am hearing.

I was introduced to Deaf culture about 4 years ago, when I was a freshman in college. A group of friends and I studied ASL because we wanted to learn how to interpret worship songs.

I was born and grew up in Grand Haven, MI. Now, I live in DeKalb, IL. I am learning ASL at Northern Illinois University. In college, I majored in chemistry and psychology. I have minors in Japanese language and neuroscience. Now, I am a second year graduate student -- I already graduated from college.

This summer, I'm only taking one class: ASL. It's been a lot of fun! In the fall, I am taking 3 psychology courses: one on biopsychology, one on psychological therapies, and one on developmental psychology. I'm really excited for them -- I think they will be fun. In the future, I think I want to become a therapist -- like a counselor, psychologist, etc. Maybe, I will be a teacher, or maybe I'll be a teacher and a therapist.

I really love learning languages! For example, I know some Spanish, ASL, English, and Japanese. I think it's a lot of fun.

Everyday, I'm really busy because of school. I am a graduate student, after all. Last spring, on Tuesday and Thursday I had my own classes, but I was also a teacher. On Monday and Wednesday, I would be in my office, and my students would come to me with questions about the class. On Friday, I have a bunch of meetings: a clinic meeting, my research lab meetings, research "brown bag" lunch meetings, and so on -- there's a bunch of them. When do I have free time? I'm always busy! Well, ok, that's not true. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and hanging out with my friends -- I love it.

Explaining about my family is a little complicated, because my parents divorced when I was 9 years old. My dad's name is Bob, and he's 56. He's married to my step-mom, Carol. Dad is cool: He's friendly, outgoing, and he loves to fish. My step-mom is nice, she's really sweet. They both live in Lake Ann, MI, near Traverse City. (If you use your hand like Michigan, it's right up there -- get it?)

My mom's name is Kathy. She is 54 years old. She's outgoing, and she volunteers at a church. She used to be a nurse, but she's retired now. My step-dad, Jeff, is really tall! He's nice, he's great. He has a really big heart -- he helps out everyone in our neighborhood with a bunch of things. My older brother's name is Adam. He is 24. He lives in Grand Rapids, MI. He's a manager at a store called Meijer. He's really funny, and he and I laugh all of the time.

I really loved my ASL class this summer. I had a lot of fun! I'd like to take ASL 2 in the fall, but it doesn't work for my schedule. Maybe I'll do an independent study or something. Bye!

  • You did great! Try not to keep your body in one place, unless you're role shifting. Other than that, I'm surprised you're in just an intro class. Great job, keep at it!
