The astronomical New Year Day of the Malayalis is Vishu which falls on the first day of Medam (April- May). It is believed that, a person's fortune for the whole year depends on the object that he first sets his eyes on, on Vishu day. As a result great importance is given to the objects that a person first sees on this day. On the previous night of Vishu, yellow cucumber, gold ornaments, rice, paddy, silver coins, coconut, bell metal mirror, laundered white cloth and the yellow konna flower are arranged in an Uruli(bell metal vessel) in front of the family deity. This is called Kani. On the dawn of Vishu day the woman of the house, wakes up and lights the lamps placed before Kani. After seeing all the objects that promise prosperity arranged as Kani, she wakes up everyone in the house who come and see them. Vishukaineetam is the gift of money given to the younger members of the family by the elders. After seeing Vishu kani, there is a display of fireworks. People visit temples too on this auspicious day. A sumptuous lunch is a part of the Vishu celebrations.
