i had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Jane Ramu, a Kenyan teacher of deafblind children in Nairobi. She and her husband James, have created a much needed centre, aptly named the Touch of Light Centre for Deafblind Children. In this video, Jane's student, Louise is showcasing some exercises that she and Jane have developed for an international children's festival at the United Nations Environment Program Headquarters in Nairobi.
Jane is working in a classroom inside a regular primary school, doing wonderful work with 10 children. Each child is multi-sensorially deprived and has their own unique set of conditions which Jane and her assistants must first diagnose before creating the necessary interventions which will assist in the socialization and normalization of children who otherwise would be left uncared for and unloved.
Together, Jane and James recently purchased a 2 acre property outside of Nairobi, where their dream is to build a self sustaining centre, home to thirty children. It will include a freshwater deep well and water tank, bedrooms, classrooms, kitchens, washrooms and a vocational studio, where graduate students can learn simple vocations which will further their sense of independence and purpose.
