Mugabe's regime is a Chinese baby. Two parties and guerrilla armies which fought against Rhodesia (and each other) in the 70s were backed by Russia and China. Russia supported ZAPU party led by Nkomo, China - ZANU party led by Mugabe. After Rhodesia failed, the China-backed side prevailed. Mugabe came to power and shortly accused Nkomo and ZAPU of military coup. Nkomo escaped the arrest and went to exile, ZAPU was disbanded, 25,000 Nkomo's supporters killed. China remained best friend for life.

British meddling was not the "only reason". Moreover it was not the reason, it was a consequance.

True, British surrendered Rhodesia to ZANU, but they did so because otherwise ZANU would continue guerrilla war and British wanted it off their hands. ZANU could do it for very long time because of support of other African regimes, but foremost because of Chinese support.
