Steeleye Span was and is one of the best folk bands in the world (the English-speaking part of it, anyway)! I remember buying this album (remember those flat vinyl things?) the day it appeared in the stores in the Washington DC area almost 40 years ago. Sounds even better after a bit of digital cleanup.

@YeOldeTune I think that's the idea :))

This was bought for my sister at Xmas in the 70's. My mission from now till Xmas is for my lot to love it like we did. We're from Essex and I think I have a tough few weeks ahead!! :-/

Hmm I had this on my radio an my brother heard it andmy brother is a freak when it comes to history, he knows things, little insignificant things that all together make him a walking history book on everything, He seems to think the king in question is King Henry I, son of King William I (The conquerer). This is because he married a woman named Edith, daughter of the king of scotland (Malcolm III) and she was very unpopular, being scottish. I can't say hes right, but it sounds it atleast.. :)

@11211313 Actually, it's a fairly common tale in folklore: the "loathly lady" who, upon being given what she asks for (it boils down to respect) becomes beautiful. Very often, there's three men, the first two who will give her meat and drink, but balk at sleeping with her. Only the last, who fulfills all her requests, gains her beauty and love.

Ottimo esempio di arrangiamento di un bel brano popolare del XV secolo.

Everytime I hear this song I think of Henry VIII.

Ahhh this is one of those song I just remember from my childhood. Pretty sure I had this album on cassette and used to listen to it in the back seat of the car haha. Even managed to see them as a youngen in the 80s in Australia.
Thanks for upload really brings back the memories!

@tommat00 Lol yeah I know ae =)

Actually, I think this may be a folk-song version of the story of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell - which is one of the more amusing stories in Morte D'Arthur. Same theme; same basic story.
Not that this isn't an excellent song.

This was early CNN..minstrels walked about...singing what they could get away with singing for news...this is a very very old song...apparently King Henry's new wife was not very popular or perhaps, stronger than he
