Hmmm, I guess one of the toughest parts of Mandarin Chinese is the tone. Without tone modulation, the meaning of words are sometimes ambigous and have to be "guessed" from the context (E.g. try wu-shu with different tones, meaning?). And for some reason, I think some phrases like ni-hao-ma (how are you?) are not so widely used in practice by the native speaker but are nontheless taught by the common Chinese language course. Some of the phrases are standard but not very practical :)
