realise that in order for letterman to be allowed to say these things on TV he had to make a deal with the network.
The laughs, the jokes, the "keep it brief" was probably rules of the TV network.

you guys know that behind the cameras there is a guy with signs and that the audience is taught before the show starts, to always do what that guy tells them to do. Right?
Like, 90% of the usual stuff letterman says isn't really funny, and you still hear the crowd laugh out loud.
And I'll let you in on a second secret: If the laughter isn't laud, they'll just add some with special effects.
It's been done since .... the 60s ???
