You are right though, Lincoln was a politician, but if he'd had his way and lived he would've "Let the South up easy," and sent former slaves back to Africa to build colonies. So the shot that struck Lincoln down was the worst shot ever fired for the South, from a Southern perspective.

Lincoln was a Republican, but you should remember that the Republicans used to be the more liberal party up until the 20th century. Lincoln wouldn't be considered a Republican by today's standards.
