VMWare Workstation 6.5 Beta is currently locked! If you get it, then download the vmware-any-any-update116 patch. Then, open your favorite terminal and enter the following commands:
tar -xvzf VMware-workstation-e.x.p-84113.x86_64.tar.gz
tar -xvzf vmware-any-any-update-116.tgz
cd vmware-any-any-update116
rm vmmon.tar
cp ../vmware-distrib/lib/modules/source/vmmon.tar ./
sudo ../vmware-install.pl
Do not run vmware-config.pl when asked to.
sudo ./runme.pl
Now run vmware-config.pl when asked.
cd /usr/lib/vmware/bin
cp vmware-vmx-debug vmware-vmx-debug-old
sudo cp -a vmware-vmx vmware-vmx-debug

You will have a VMCI Socket error, it's fine. Now set up the Virtual Machine. Hard Drive Space: 15GB+, RAM: 1024MB+, Video RAM: 128MB. Uncheck 3D Acceleration. Install Windows XP. Once Windows is installed, install the VMWare Tools and shutdown the virtual machine. Now enable 3D acceleration, then power the virtual machine on again and install DirextX 9.0c. Now run dxdiag. Test out directdraw and direct3D. If everything looks good, then start installing FFXI! Without AGP Texture Acceleration POL's Menus will bog performance. After FFXI is installed and patched, do not start FFXI. Restart your actual computer, then start VMWare. Before you start FFXI, go to the FFXI Settings and set everything as low as possible.

  • VMWare can get viruses. So be sure to have a Virus Scanner.

  • It's awesome. Is this Ubuntu host and Windows XP guest?

  • Yes it is. It is more playable with the graphics turned down more, but it still runs decently as you can see.

  • it runs but it dont run fine when your useing a program, and you cant even use the the full 256mb of ram. plays emulators fine but real software or games not so well. dont know why they cut the the use of the ram of all things.

  • @deluxedookie wrong, linux runs fine, only problem is the lack of hardware acceleration for graphics.

  • No, it's a UNIX command-line terminal. In Ubuntu, this would be at Applications>Accessories>Terminal. Or hit Alt-F2 and type in "gnome-terminal" (without quotes). In other Linux distros, it can vary.

  • VMware cannot itself get viruses, but if you are running a guest that can get viruses (i.e. Windows), then that guest can get those viruses.

  • it will run but like shit it can barly run linux.

  • you're stupid.

  • hmm technically i could set this up on a ps3 then? not sure if it would run any better :s
