Aasalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah:

Should laypeople and students be delving into differences? NO!

Unfortunately, before learning ESSENTIAL topics like: Akhlaq (manners), Fiqh of Tahara, Fiqh of Salah, reading and reflecting upon the Qur'an, 40 hadith by Imam Nawawi, a small minority of young Muslims will unfortunately get into the differences or Ilm-ul-Khilaf. Or, in dead of learning a topic like Aqeedah to get closer to Allah subhana wa t'ala, a youngster will only learn Aqeedah to argue and debate with others. Speaking from experience, and I'm still not perfect, this type of information seeking on differences within Islam eventually is like an addiction, just like people are addicted to facebook and the news or gossip. It has a negative impact on your sincerity! So try to avoid disputation and seeking information which you can't practice, only for entertainment. It leads to confusion. Ask yourself first before looking into these things: Do I wake up for fajr?

Allahu Alim. Allah forgive me if I said anything incorrect. And Allah subhana wa t'ala preserve Sh. Abdullah Hakim Quick

Hasan Al Basri (rahimallah) said when he heard a people arguing:"These people have become bored with worship, and speech has become light upon [their tongue], and their piety has decreased and that is why they speak." [Narrated by Ahmad in az-Zuhd and Aboo Nu'aym in al-Hilyah.]
