R.E.M.'s version came out in 1987.
Great Big Sea's version came out in 1997.

Well as I said in the description this is an REM cover so REM originally did it.
I've heard a 3rd version of it which is like Folk styled by a band called "Great Big Sea" or something like that and a 4th version by a British band (I think) that I can't remember the name of.

@100Ultimate Just checked and yeah that was the band I was thinking of. Though it means I got the nationality wrong. lol. I'd only ever heard the chorus part and they sound a bit British in the chorus. :P
