In theaters this winter. Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story thats as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of whats actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky

  • Should I show this movie to my psychology class?

  • where can I download this?

  • @machinesamba I TOTALLY agree with you. I like burzum's music because of thier idea, all the "old norwegian forest" stuff; but i do think that this nazi varg hasn't showed up, and it should had.

Also, Burzum is an awesome soundtrack for D&D Horror games :)

  • Complete apologist piece for Vikernes. No mention of his role in the Heathen Front. No confrontation about his earlier writings in neo-nazi zines. It's as if his Odinism somehow exists outside his racist, pure-blood nationalism and eugenicism. Vikernes' real extremism goes completely unexplored, though the filmmakers are quick to labor the point that he's not a satanist, which any black metal fan knows.

I'm not looking for demonization, I'm looking for fully realized journalism. It's not here.

  • @Khroniksoul Listen to Jotunspor.

  • Varg was a smart guy. This movie really changed my perspective. Black metal is more of a "punk movement" I say that not because of the music, but the attitude. The catholic church really tries to take away culture and bring their own into various countries. It's been that way for centuries, it's almost as of they want power and control over everything. The inner circle knew this, only most people think its satin ism, not rebellion. Black metal rules \m/

  • @warlocksarewatching I prefer them crispy.

  • @Khroniksoul yes, these bands are fine, i would like to add Emperor and Limbonic Art. you know, we the metallers are always trying to add some bands on any list, to pay them a tribute even if it's just by mentioning their names.

  • @ExNoctemNacimur i can't believe i called death metal mellow

  • I don't really know about Black Metal. I mean, it's all just a tad scary and the people and ideals part of the genre really scare me. Better stick to my death metal, its more mellow
