The Human Microbiome Project has proven that tobacco and cigarette smoke contain cancer-causing microbes. This is a short excerpt from Professor Trevor Marshalls' presentation on May 25, 2011 at the "NeuroTalk 2011" congress in Dalian, China.

How do these microbes survive the fire from the burning tobacco?

This of course is what first springs to mind when this is put forth. I had some qualms about posting just this snippet of his speech, as it is then taken out of the larger context. People interested in his research should actually watch his entire presentation, which is here:

I intend to pose the question to Trevor Marshall during his next teleconference/webinar, as it is a good question which many people would like to have addressed.

At a guess it is something on the order of the microbes being so small that a lot of unburnt nano-sized dust or microbiota from the tobacco is inhaled, drawn in by the smoke behind it, and that frequent oral contact with the microbes all over a fresh cigarette bring one in oral contact with enough of the live microbes to cause infection. A fresh unburnt cigarette would be crawling with billions of these nano-sized microbes, which one then places in one's mouth (up to forty or more times a day or more, for a heavy smoker.)

I have no doubt that Professor Marshall's contention that most modern diseases are caused by microbial, intracellular infection is correct. His explanation makes the most sense.
His extensive research has made him one of the most respected and prominent authorities on the subject of chronic disease, as he is on the leading edge of scientific analysis of disease, some might say decades ahead of his time. His resultant record in treating chronic illness speaks for itself.

He travels the world extensively, and his many presentations at major scientific conferences can be seen at his Youtube channel here:
