I think that's for two reasons. 1. Because rearranging the first two stiches would result in a messy puckered edge and 2. because if you then sew the sides together you can then piece together the two sides using the bar of stitches between the knit and purl stitch effectively sacrificing the first stitch. This results in a tidy seam that sits well with a wee bar of two stitches running up the inside edge. (it's also a good place to tidily weave in ends)

I have tried this over and over and I can get the cast on but I don't end up with a total 2 x 2 ribbing. Why do I P1K1 as the first two stitches for row 3? That means that my first stitch will always be a purl stitch on the right side and I just want knit 2 purl 2? This cast on looks great and I really want to use it.

Sorry! Me again! I figured out what the problem was. When you said it was a knit stitch, it means that my first row is the flip side of what was cast on, I misunderstood and thought it meant I've created a stitch that I knit on the first row. So for my P1K1 pattern, my last cast-on stitch is a knit stitch, so that when I switch over to my left hand, it becomes the back of a knit stitch, therefore a purl stitch. Got it! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your video! I do have a question however. Whenever I knit the stitches that were cast on towards me, and purl the ones cast on away from me (hope you get what I mean), it ends up incorrect. So, when I follow exactly as you did, that first stitch that you cast on (not the slip knot), needs to be purled, not knitted. I'm not sure why. However, the result is definitely a tubular cast on. Any idea why this is the case?
