@jnyveslbl I said popular, because that's more objective than "better". If you go by chart positions and album sales, you can find many versions that were at least as popular as the first. Funny you should mention Elvis though: two of his most iconic songs, "Blue Suede Shoes", and "Hound Dog" are both covers. Also, broadway musicals were responsible for a lot of popular music from the 40s - 60s, often being covered by different singers than the broadway cast and being number 1 hits.

@wickedphant0m If you search trying to find a song that interpretation by a "third-party" (a different singer than who the song was designed for) is better than the version performed by the signer it was writen for, you will have a hard time finding one. In fact, exceptions to that confirms the "rule": the song "Don't Be Cruel", performed by Cheap Trix. However, that version is no match with Elvis's singing!

@jnyveslbl I don't buy that argument. Some of the most popular pop/rock songs that exist were recorded by different singers than the original. I think there can be certain singers who are less appropriate to cover certain songs, but to say that every song belongs to only one singer...no.
