If guns were taken away, the criminals have an advantage. This advantage is the loss of an equalizer.

If a 250 LB. rapist takes on a 130 LB. woman with a knife, the rapist will win.

Now, if the same people went against each other with the woman having a gun, the woman is on equal footing with (And possibly having an advantage over) the man that is almost two times her size.
