Film is not exactly the first thing you associate with Switzerland, and definitely not science fiction. But sometimes even the most unexpected things can happen, as it does with Cargo - the story of Laura, a doctor on a gigantic spaceship on its way to distant colonies in space. Her motivation is to get away from Earth, which has long ceased to be inhabitable, and to settle down on Rhea, a distant paradise world for people with special privileges. Just before reaching the destination, something goes wrong. Laura moves to a forbidden area of the spaceship and - maybe? - sees something in the cargo of the ship, which has serious consequences for who and what she can trust. A murder mystery with the claustrophobic emptiness of space as a backdrop, complemented by thoughts of solitude, paranoia, the alienation of technology and the hope of a better future. Maybe we have seen it all before, but nonetheless, 'Cargo' manages in its own unpretentious way to make it seem as if we're seeing it all for the first time. An impressive film in every way, which shows that we have much to expect from Switzerland - and the first-time feature directors Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter.
