risingsunproductions.net presents Matayoshi Kobudo featuring Shinpo Matayoshi performing many rare open hand and kobudo katas. Shot in Okinawa Japan this is a special DVD.
It's Jeet Kune Do, a martial art invented by Bruce Lee, how it is the same sense I don't know, perhaps he also taught kata's according to student level, but hey I'm just guessing at that... don't karate kick the messenger :P
I do not think anyone should criticize Matayoshi Shinpo soke for changing any kata methods. They are his to change. I trained in the Kodokan fron 1986 until present and have seen the kata methods performed many different ways. Matayoshi Shinpo put more emphasis on improving the person over standardization. I think this is the "old" way if someone is interested in preservation I suggest learning the concepts and applying them versus mimiicking the standardized version.
Yes, the chages lead to a rift between Matayoshi Sensei and Odo Seikichi Sensei. Odo Sensei was a preservationist and thought that changes to old kata were not appropriate.
