Diary of a 16mm test/short

Monday evening: film
Tuesday: rest
Wednesday: give film to the lab
Thursday: pick up processed/telecine'd film from lab
Friday: edit
Saturday: upload to Vimeo

This is the first thing i have shot on 16mm, it was shot on a Bolex H16 which i was testing out for my old University, which recently acquired 3 H16's. i wanted to shoot something other than just someone holding a clapper board (see my super8 test) so i wrote a 2 minute script one sunny afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

this is a very quick edit, and i had to drop the quality considerably to get it online. i will probably remove the song and dub the whole thing eventually.

hope you like...

:-)

  • Man, this is great stuff!! So you filmed on super 8mm film through a Bolex H16? How'd you go about doing that? did you need to make any modifications to the camera? Also what stock were you filming on? fuji or Kodak?

Seriously it looks great, i know near to nothing about film, i've only shot on digital, and i've been looking to get a h16 for ages, i think you've just convinced me!!

  • @liamrd1989 nooooooooo, sorry for any confusion, its 16mm film, going through the bolex. no super 8, i did another super 8 video that can be seen on my channel, but its nothing to do with this.

  • dude the footage oon this. is it only on a bolex?

  • @ragingfiremonkey: yeah its all shot on a bolex. on 3 reels of 100ft film. so i shot about 7 and a half minutes worth of footage in all.

  • How did you get you bolex footage into 16:9.?

  • hi there,

i shot everything slightly wide, and then in fcp i just added a 16:9 matte.

    so its cropped.

  • @joegideonv Thanks. My apologies for the triple comment. YouTube said there was an error and I should try again. I did it twice, then gave up.

  • If you are bent on a camera, check out used Eclairs. Quiet, 400' mags, sound- there are two kinds, ACL and NPR. I prefer the ACL, but... You can find nice ones for $2k- make that ONE thousand. Nice ACL package on eBay for $900.00

  • I just sold my SR2 for $5k on eBay. But with a budget of 30k? You might find a local pro who will "volunteer" his gear and expertise.Even w/S8, 30k is mighty slim. You'll need video Xfers- It's just mighty slim Unfortunately, film is one thing no one comps any more. Fuji once would give 200' samples away, but now that everyone's a filmmaker...

  • I'm working on a movie, too. Let's say my indie has a budget between 15-25k USD. What model of bolex and film would you recommend? I'm going for a very original look, with big colors that pop out, so in post-production I can add this certain effect I came up with. If you think I should get a camera from another brand, that's cool, but I'd like a bolex recommendation as well... I've seen an H16 R5 with lots of accessories for 2,000$. The movie's expected length is 150 minutes.

  • @PrototypeAndroid for 30,000 no way. you can buy a arri sr2 on ebay for about 5,000 the camera is infinitely better. or just hire a sr3 or the like, but if you must buy, look for a cheap sr2.

  • This looks so good. I can't wait to get an H16 and try out some Kodak Vision stock.

  • @CrazyShortsCrew hahahaha
