In this "premiere showing" of Baltimore's "TV Yard Sale" (August 29 1999), there's so much more than a masterful demonstration of the art of selling. There's the comparative golfing skills of Richard Nixon's two vice presidents, the second being Gerald Ford (or was it George?); a basic lesson in eye surgery; where Spiro Agnew went to high school (Forest Park); and where to buy waste cans in Howard County, Maryland.
Also, the hosts Bob Jansen and Jay Harris treat us to the glorious, pure, Baltimore long O, uncorrupted by the filthy L sound appended by Americans everywhere else. (Translation help for non-Baltimoreans: "phohne" = pholne; "dohn't" = doln't; "knohw" = knolwe; "goh" = gol; etc. Got it?)
The complete Agnew quote on the waste can is: "BUT I DID SAY . . ." (and then in teeny-tiny letters) "fore!"
Ben's phone number still works, hasn't changed from the mid-1950s, so go ahead and give "The Mayor of Hebbville" a call - whether or not he still has the Agnew waste can to sell you. (Can this be right? Does a crossroads get its own mayor???)
