My Red Eared Slider hatchlings, Gamera and Leonardo, enjoying their relatively new habitat. The tank is a 10 gallon all glass aquarium. Hidden behind the rocks are a submersible heater and a Duetto 100 filter.

In this video, a batch of 30 feeder guppies have been added to the tank. Their stock was rapidly depleted, as hatchling and juvenile turtles prefer to eat live protein over pellets and vegetation.

  • OMG! One of your RES is named Gamera? My favorite monster of all time! Totally cool. Your turtle tank is awesome. RES are my favorite turtles. I use to have the babys as pets. Are you going to make a video of them when you move them to a bigger tank?

  • I actually already have moved them to a bigger tank- it is a 40 gallon with a large waterfall on the right, a floating island for sunbathing, and a custom rock background. Check it out in my other videos.

  • Nice video! What kind of rocks you put in your tank? I have a 5 months red eared slider in a container with water, not in a tank. I really want a turtle tank like yours.

  • The substrate is a kind of gravel usually referred to in poet stores as "river rock." The stones are probably about 1/4 inch on average. Regular aquarium gravel is smaller and more likely to be inadvertently ingested by the animals, and anyway I prefer a vivarium/paludarium that looks more natural.

As for the larger rock, I honestly don't know- a large slab of red shale maybe? I chose it for it's size and shape. Sliders need an area to crawl out and bask.

  • I'm normally partial to lava rock- it makes for great waterfalls. But sliders need a DRY area to bask on- for good plastron health I believe- so having a waterfall over it would be counterproductive. And anyway I worried that the lava rock might have too many jagged edges that could damage their shells. As they grow into a larger tank I might start using lava rock though. Your slider would probably do fine in a 10 gallon- you can get them for about $10. Eventually you'll need a bigger tank.

  • how do you clean it.. I just hold my tank to completely clean it. And hold it to i get to the bathroom and put new water in it.

  • I remove the turtles to a smaller container during cleaning. I use a suction hose to vacuum out the gravel, and I remove the filter to clean it in the sink. I end up siphoning out nearly all of the water while cleaning the gravel, and I replace it with clean dechlorinated water.

This is also a good time to re-seat the plants in the gravel, as the turtles are large enough now to uproot them on a regular basis.

  • thats a really nice setup like the rocks

  • Nice setup, must be a pain to clean

  • i love ur tank set up its awsome,i have 1 RES that is an inch 1/2 how deep should i put the water i also have a heater, basking floating dock, filter, uvb and uva light,no gravel and 2 fake water plants on each side of the tank.but iam not sure how deep should i put the water

  • Its a very nice setup. Ive been reading alot about Red eared sliders and Found out that they should have more room to bast than swim. Also Plastic plants arent usually a good Idea for they will eat them and become sick. What I cant find out is what type of Freshwater Fish I can have in the same Tank. Are the fish in this video still alive? And if they are what are they. You should probly put them in a 50 gal once they are 4". You could stunt there growth. Still very nice setup.

  • Thanks :D
