Nog niet zo lang geleden zagen we de toekomst vol vertrouwen tegemoet. Maar in 2008 ebde het vertrouwen weg uit de economie, en begon in het Westen de strijd tussen Wall Street en Main Street, tussen graaiers en veranderaars, tussen marktfundamentalisten en nationaliseerders. Velen hebben nu de hoop gevestigd op Barack Obama, op de Europese Unie of op het Aziatische of het Braziliaanse economische model.
Maar keert met change ook het vertrouwen weer terug?
De term 'historisch' viel in 2008 veelvuldig, zowel rondom de economische recessie ('wordt het net zo erg als de jaren dertig?') als bij de overwinning van Barack Obama ('voor het eerst in de geschiedenis...'). We lijken ons te bevinden op een scharnier in de tijd, maar de ontwikkelingen kunnen vele kanten op. Nog steeds voorspelt de economie niet veel goeds, terwijl de verwachtingen van de nieuwe president van de VS nou juist erg hoog zijn. De ongewisse toekomst zit dan ook vol met vragen: schuilt er een kans -en rendement!- in de crisis? Keert de groei terug en zal dat dan wel overal op de wereld het geval zijn? Gaat China de orde handhaven of in chaos belanden? Houdt Barack Obama woord en spreekt hij zich in zijn eerste presidentiële redevoeringen daadwerkelijk uit over politieke voornemens en krachtige daden? Wat is de ethische en juridische dimensie van het ontstaan van kredietcrisis en mondiale recessie? Zal er een nieuw economisch systeem of model ontstaan dat als voorbeeld dient voor de hele wereld? En meer in het algemeen: hoe nu verder dan?
Tegenlicht betoont zich eens temeer een 'future affairs programma' en schetst in woord en beeld de contouren van een (mogelijke) nieuwe orde.
