Too many elitist try to dictate how one genre should sound, nevermind the fact it's all about 'artistic expression'. Too many people forget that you, as a listener come second to pushing personal limits in imagery and music. So many people want to listen to something they can easily categorize or compare to other artists for reference. I prefer to see a group or solo artist totally throw all preconcieved notions about their 'style' out the window.

I think his point is that genre's do tend to continually evolve. Look at how popular hip-hop sounded in the 80's and how it sounds now, they are very different beasts. Genre's don't have to always sound the same, time and culture changes that. Do you think anyone in the mid 70's thought punk would sound the way it did by the 2000's? or even the mid 80's? Same with hip-hop, rock in general, or any other genre, they are not only defined by a sound but by a sub-culture and it's development.
