Cat Toilet Training - in progress
UPDATE: SammyD is completely toilet trained. This is the best thing I've ever done. He was 8 years old when I taught him in less than 2 1/2 months. I used the CitiKitty training kit. Highly recommended!

  • I am using the Citykitty tray for my two 3.5 year old boy cats right now. They have been using the tray for 10 days now and they are already at ring 1 and half of ring 2. I found that putting the litter more toward the front of the tray and leaving the back bare gets them to aim in the hole better. Also, instead of removing an entire ring at once it's best to do half a ring every half week. At their current rate of learning they should be completely trained within the next 3 weeks.

  • I did half rings too. It goes fast at first, but you may want to slow down when the opening gets bigger. Whatever toilet you train them on is the only one they'll use in the house too. Good luck!

  • next trick: teaching them how to flush!

  • do dogs do that too? if they're alpha they don't bury? both my dog and my dog before never buried their poop, they just kinda glanced at it and whiffed then left as if to say "ew".....lol

  • Wait a minute, he's not trying to bury it anymore - he thinks he's the alpha! Damn kitty! ;-)

  • It's a psycological thing. The Aplha gets to leave his on top, as a territory marking, so therefore the more submissive cats bury theirs to stop it smelling.

In this case, humans are the alpha.

Plus it's hygeine fitting of a cat.

  • I only cut out the holes on the weekends when I had the chance to keep an eye on him. If I forgot, I'd just wait until the next weekend. I don't have to coax him at all. I'm thinking of installing an automatic flusher so I don't have to deal with it at all. With the money I save on litter, it should already have paid for itself. Good luck!

  • Oh good, I'm not the only one who's been at this for 3 months! I thought my cats were being stupid or stubborn, or both. I've taken the inner bowl out now and sprinkle a little bit of litter on the edges of the toilet bowl. They definitely want it flushed after the other cat goes. I have to keep my eye on them and constantly coax them into going. We hope to move in a month or so. I hope I don't have to do this all over again!!!

  • clever! just remember to not use that salad bowl for salads anymore! ;)
